Ripio is a Latin American cryptocurrency and payments company that grew out of the BitPagos merchant-processor business. On 3 January 2017 the firm announced a Series A and the rename from BitPagos to Ripio, positioning a consumer wallet and credit path alongside regional payment rails.[1][2]

History

As BitPagos, the company built merchant acceptance for bitcoin and cards in Latin America. The January 2017 Series A was reported at about US$1.9 million, led by Huiyin Blockchain Venture Capital, with Digital Currency Group, Boost VC, and Tim Draper named among participants in contemporary coverage. CEO Sebastián Serrano described the Ripio name as better suited to a consumer business.[1][2]

Services

Operator materials describe Ripio as providing stablecoins, on- and off-ramps, wallets, and crypto infrastructure oriented to LATAM individuals and businesses, with country-specific product availability (including Argentina and Brazil mentions on the public site). Company pages also give separate US Money Services Business details for OTCIS LLC (Ripio US / Ripio Select).[3]

Relation to BitPagos

BitPagos is the historical merchant-processor brand. There was no separate BitPagos “shutdown day” in the Series A coverage — the company continued as Ripio.[1][2]
