BitPagos was a Latin America–focused bitcoin and card payment processor that enabled merchants to accept credit-card and bitcoin payments, settle in dollars to manage volatility, and pay out by wire or bitcoin. It later raised a Series A and rebranded to Ripio in January 2017.[1][2]
History
BitPagos operated a merchant stack aimed at emerging markets and countries with weak currencies. Contemporary coverage in 2013–2014 described Latin American expansion and a seed round reported around US$600,000 including Boost VC and other participants.[3]
On 3 January 2017 TechCrunch and CoinDesk reported that BitPagos had closed a Series A of about US$1.9 million led by Huiyin Blockchain Venture Capital, with Digital Currency Group, Boost VC, and Tim Draper among participants named in those reports, and that the company was rebranding to Ripio under CEO Sebastián Serrano. The rebrand was framed as a pivot toward consumer wallet and credit products in South America while continuing payments infrastructure.[1][2]
Former products
Historical tools in early coverage included email invoicing, virtual terminals, shopping-cart integrations, and an Android application for merchants.[2]
