VirWoX (Virtual World Exchange) was an Austrian exchange run by Virtual World Services GmbH. It specialised in Linden Dollars (Second Life) and related virtual currencies, and from April 2011 also supported bitcoin traded against Linden Dollars, which could in turn be converted to EUR, USD, GBP, CHF and other virtual currencies on the platform.[1]

The earlier article called it a leading independent virtual-currency exchange with about 800,000 users and 2012 volume of €29 million / US$38 million.[1]

Products

Besides bitcoin and Linden Dollars, the earlier page listed Avination C$ and the Open Metaverse Currency (OMC). Deposit and withdrawal methods named on that page included PayPal, credit/debit cards via Skrill/Moneybookers, paysafecard, Ukash, SOFORTbanking, and bank transfers. The service was described as available in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.

Buying bitcoin on VirWoX was typically a two-step path: fiat or other funds into Linden Dollars, then Linden Dollars into BTC. A Second Life account was not required for that path according to the earlier instructions.

Closure

On 4 November 2019 the operator posted an end-of-service notice stating that VirWoX would permanently close on 6 January 2020 and that accounts would be inaccessible after 11:00 Central European Time that day.[2] A capture from the closing day states that the exchange had closed its business on 6 January 2020.[3] A Bitcointalk thread from the same period quotes the November notice.[4]
