ShapeShift is a cryptocurrency trading service founded in 2014 by Erik Voorhees. In its early years it was known for relatively lightweight, often identity-light instant conversions between digital assets. Over time the product line moved toward a multi-chain interface for swapping, tracking, and related DeFi activity. The corporate entity later wound down into a FOX-token DAO structure.[1]
DAO transition
On 14 July 2021 ShapeShift planned to wind down operations as a formal company and hand its legacy to a decentralised autonomous organisation controlled by holders of its FOX token. Founder Erik Voorhees said the company would, over roughly four to twelve months, move to a structure with no employees, no bank accounts, and no CEO, framing the step as closing the corporate entity rather than leaving a conventional company atop a protocol.[1]
The plan included an airdrop of 340 million FOX tokens to past ShapeShift users (about 900,000 addresses) and to addresses on several DeFi protocols, with further allocation detail and a claim window in ShapeShift's materials. At the time the company had roughly 65 employees and operated a crypto interface spanning multiple chains and wallets.[1]
Products
As of September 2026, shapeshift.com presents a non-custodial, community-oriented multichain trading and wallet interface under the ShapeShift name, alongside FOX governance materials.[2]
