OCEAN
OCEAN is a non-custodial bitcoin mining pool operated at ocean.xyz. It is a separate live service from the historical Eligius pool. Company materials describe conceptual lineage and a relaunch, not continuity of Eligius accounts or hashrate.
History and Eligius lineage
The live path https://ocean.xyz/about returns 404 as of lab and staging checks. A Wayback Machine capture of that About page preserves a 31 October 2023 message from founder Luke Dashjr describing the 2011 start of Eligius, later maintenance by wizkid057, Eligius's shutdown, and Dashjr's decision to "relaunch Eligius as OCEAN" as a transparent, non-custodial pool.[1]
The Eligius and OCEAN wiki titles are separate entries. Shared user balances or hashrate are not claimed here.
Products and operations
OCEAN's public site describes:
- Non-custodial payouts — miners paid in the coinbase/generation transaction when practical, so the Bitcoin network pays miners directly while the pool coordinates the split.[2]
- TIDES (Transparent Index of Distinct Extended Shares) — OCEAN's published reward scheme, contrasted by the company with PPLNS/FPPS approximations.[2]
- DATUM — optional miner-side block template construction. The site advertises a fee discount for DATUM users (stated as 1% vs a base 2% fee on the home page). Exact percentages should be confirmed on the live fee schedule.[2]
- Stratum endpoint documented on the home page:
mine.ocean.xyz:3334, with worker username as a bitcoin address (no account required).[2] - Published payout threshold text on the home FAQ (ordinary threshold around 0.01048576 BTC, with discretionary lower thresholds if a miner stops — subject to change).[2]
The home page also states a SOC 2 Type 1 attestation for enterprise security and reliability. That is a company claim pending the firm's published report if stronger wording is needed.[2]
Team materials on the same site note Jason Hughes (VP Engineering) as having co-operated Eligius historically. That is biographical colour only, not proof of corporate succession.[2]
