Firi is a Norwegian cryptocurrency exchange and crypto-asset service provider headquartered in Oslo. It was founded in 2017 as MiraiEx by Thuc Hoang and Øyvind Kvanes and renamed Firi on 5 September 2021. The company offers NOK and other Nordic-fiat access to bitcoin and other crypto-assets, custody, and related services under Norwegian financial supervision.[1]

History

Firi was founded in 2017. A beta of the MiraiEx service went live in 2018. In 2019 the firm registered with Finanstilsynet (the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) for digital-currency exchange activity. On 5 September 2021 the exchange announced the rename from MiraiEx to Firi. The company states that the name recalls an Old Norse word associated with a lighthouse.[1]

MiCA authorisation

On 22 May 2026 Finanstilsynet granted Firi AS authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) under Article 63 of the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). According to that Finanstilsynet notice, Firi AS was the first CASP operating a crypto-asset trading platform to receive an Article 63 authorisation. The authorisation covers custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients, operation of a trading platform, exchange of crypto-assets for funds, exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets, execution of orders on behalf of clients, and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients.[2][1]

Services

The platform is oriented to Nordic retail and professional customers. Firi offered NOK bank funding, including express payments, and trading of bitcoin and altcoins. Company materials describe custody, exchange, order execution, and transfers across the digital-asset value chain under the firm’s regulatory authorisations.[1]
