Huobi is a cryptocurrency exchange group that began as a China-originated trading platform and later operated internationally. The international consumer brand is now HTX.[1]

Ownership transition

In October 2022, press reported that co-founder and controlling shareholder Leon Li sold a controlling stake in Huobi Global to a buyout vehicle managed by About Capital Management.[2][3] Contemporaneous Bloomberg/Yahoo reporting attributed to people familiar with the matter that Justin Sun acquired roughly a 60% shareholding via About Capital for about US$1 billion; Sun publicly denied being the buyer and described an advisory role, while Huobi spokespeople also denied that Sun was the buyer.[4][5]

Sun later appeared in HTX communications as a member of the HTX Global Advisory Board in connection with the 2023 rebrand.[1]

HTX rebrand

On 13 September 2023 at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, Huobi announced that its international brand would rebrand to HTX. Company communications presented Justin Sun as a member of the HTX Global Advisory Board for the unveiling. Operator materials explained “H” for Huobi, “T” for TRON, and “X” for exchange / tenth anniversary symbolism, with slogan framing “HTX, Just Trade It.”[1]

September 2023 security incident

On 25 September 2023 Justin Sun stated on X that HTX had suffered a loss of 5,000 ETH due to a hacker attack, that HTX had covered the losses, and that the platform was operating normally. Decrypt reported the incident with a dollar framing of about US$7.9 million and quoted Sun’s post (which also wrote “$8 million USD” alongside the 5,000 ETH figure).[6]
