Bitpanda is an Austrian cryptocurrency brokerage and trading platform founded in Vienna in 2014 by Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek, and Christian Trummer. The corporate entity operated earlier as Coinimal GmbH while the consumer brand used the Bitpanda name.[1]
MiCA authorisation
Austria’s Financial Market Authority (FMA) reported that Bitpanda GmbH (Commercial Register FN 569240v) was granted authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider under Article 63 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCAR) by administrative decision dated 9 April 2025. The FMA states that the company is authorised to provide:
- custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients
- exchange of crypto-assets for funds
- exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets
- execution of orders for crypto-assets on behalf of clients
- placing of crypto-assets
- reception and transmission of orders for crypto-assets on behalf of clients
- transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients
At the same time, the FMA determined that Bitpanda GmbH’s prior registration as a virtual asset service provider under Article 32a FM-GwG dated 19 December 2019 had lapsed as a consequence of the Article 63 MiCAR grant.[2]
