This page is about TurnKey GNU/Linux’s BitKey live CD/USB toolkit. It is not Block Inc’s Bitkey self-custody app and hardware (bitkey.world).

BitKey is a Debian-based live CD/USB distribution developed by TurnKey GNU/Linux as a self-contained “Bitcoin Swiss Army Knife” for air-gapped Bitcoin transactions and offline cold-storage workflows. First released in 2014. The bitkey.io site carries the TurnKey BitKey title.[1]

The project’s stated philosophy is that users should not have to trust third parties — including BitKey’s authors — and that air-gapped workflows raise the bar without being a silver bullet. TurnKey blog posts described the toolkit as the “closest you can get to perfectly secure Bitcoin transactions”.[2]

Features

BitKey offers bootable live modes, including air-gapped and online variants, and a bundled toolkit.[1] Bundled tools included Electrum, Warpwallet (Brainwallet), coinbin, bitaddress, qrcode, zxcvbn, and bx (libbitcoin-explorer).
