BTC Direct (legal entity often styled BTC Direct Europe B.V.) is a Dutch cryptocurrency broker founded in 2013. It sells bitcoin and other crypto-assets to EU customers and remains a live service.[1]

History

Company about materials present BTC Direct as one of the older EU crypto brokers, growing from a small founding team to 40+ staff, with a stated mission of making bitcoin and crypto accessible across Europe.[1]

Milestones listed on the same page include:

  • 2013 — founded in the Netherlands
  • 2020 — Series A for EU expansion
  • 2022 — registration with De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) under the AMLD5 regime
  • 2024 — MiCA readiness programme
  • 2025 — MiCA licence obtained[1]

Products and operations

BTC Direct operates primarily as a broker (buy and sell crypto for EUR and local payment rails) rather than a classic order-book exchange. Company about materials describe EU retail access, transparent pricing, MiCA and AML compliance, and self-custody-friendly withdrawals to user wallets. Detailed fee tables and payment-rail inventories from older wiki revisions are omitted unless re-confirmed on current btcdirect.eu pages.[1]

Regulation (MiCAR / AFM)

BTC Direct states it is MiCA-licensed via the Dutch Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) under registration / authorisation number 41000009, and that it complies with EU AML, sanctions, and Travel Rule requirements. The 41000009 figure is taken from the company's about-us statement.[1]

Company support has published an article stating that BTC Direct received its MiCAR licence from the AFM on 18 June 2025. That date is presented here as a company-support claim alongside the about-us authorisation number.[2]
