OKX is a global cryptocurrency exchange and digital-asset services platform. The brand succeeded OKEx. On 18 January 2022 a GlobeNewswire release announced the company-wide rebrand from OKEx to OKX as a cross-platform crypto, NFT, and DeFi services provider.[1]
History
Mingxing “Star” Xu co-founded OKCoin in 2013 as a bitcoin trading venue. An international trading brand later operated as OKEx. The January 2022 rebrand renamed that international platform OKX and described an expanded product suite beyond spot trading, including yield and related investing products named in the company release.[1]
European MiCA entity
OKX Europe Limited is the group’s European Economic Area hub in Malta. Company learn pages state that OKX Europe Limited received Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisation from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) under MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Act, Chapter 647 of the Laws of Malta) on 27 January 2025. Those pages list authorised services including custody and administration of crypto-assets, operation of a crypto-asset trading platform, exchange of crypto-assets for funds or other crypto-assets, and execution, reception and transmission of orders, and describe passporting of that Maltese licence across EEA member states. That passporting description is the company’s self-description of its MiCA permissions.[2][3]
