ChangeTip was a bitcoin micropayments and social tipping service operated by ChangeCoin. It kept an off-chain ledger of tips and only pushed on-chain bitcoin transactions when a user withdrew funds. Tipping was available on platforms including GitHub, Google+, Reddit, StockTwits, Tumblr, Twitter, and YouTube.
History
ChangeTip was founded on December 17, 2013.[1] In November 2014, tipping small amounts of bitcoin became a viral practice on Reddit and Twitter, which drove rapid growth in users and tips and increased use of bits as a unit of bitcoin.
In April 2016, Airbnb acqui-hired a substantial part of ChangeCoin's team, including leadership. Airbnb stated it was not acquiring the company's assets or intellectual property and had no plans to add bitcoin to its own products.[2][3]
After the acqui-hire, ChangeTip sought a buyer for the remaining tipping service and codebase. In November 2016, founder and CEO Nick Sullivan announced that tipping would be turned off at the end of that month. The website was left available for a limited time so users could withdraw remaining balances.[4]
