Bitcoin Wallet (package de.schildbach.wallet) is an open-source Android bitcoin wallet based on bitcoinj. It is a reference Simplified Payment Verification client. Private keys stay on the device. No registration with a web service is required for basic use.[1][2]
History
The wallet was first released on 7 March 2011.[3]
Source development moved to GitLab under bitcoin-wallet/bitcoin-wallet. F-Droid continues to publish signed builds from that tree.[2][1]
Features
F-Droid describes peer-to-peer operation without a mandatory cloud account, amount display in BTC, mBTC and µBTC, conversion to national currencies, send and receive via NFC, QR codes or Bitcoin URLs, offline Bluetooth payment paths, system notifications for received coins, paper-wallet sweeping, and a balance widget. Safety notes call out Taproot, SegWit and bech32m address support. Privacy notes call out optional Tor via the separate Orbot app.[1]
Since version 4.0 the wallet has supported BIP32 hierarchical deterministic wallets. Later 4.x releases added export of an account extended public key in a documented query-string form for watch-only use.[4][5]
Distribution
F-Droid listed version 11.03 (build 110300) as the suggested build, added 27 April 2026, requiring Android 9.0 or newer. That package is built and signed by the original developer and is reproducible against the published source tarball on F-Droid’s record.[1]
GitLab hosts the source tree and release tags. Other store listings may exist separately. F-Droid and GitLab are the primary references for current builds and source.[2][1]
The project license is GPLv3. Maintainers advise using the wallet for pocket-sized amounts.[1]
