In early 2021, Andrew Lee took direct control of the Freenode network and combined it with a number of other IRC networks already under his control. Within months, the majority of users of most projects migrated to the new Libera network. Luke-Jr has since managed to convince the new Freenode opers that Bitcoiners could continue to maintain a successful presence on Freenode and maintain it as a useful community.
Freenode is the original home of IRC discussion about and technical work on Bitcoin. In early 2021, former Freenode staff started a new network called LiberaChat, which has rapidly become a popular network as well.
