The [[Original_Bitcoin_client|Bitcoin client]] project has transitioned from what was essentially a one-person software endeavor, with Satoshi functioning as the primary developer and gatekeeper for all changes, to a more distributed, free software model of development. The Linux Kernel development process is being used as the model for how changes flow into the original Bitcoin application:
# Developers work in their own source code trees, sharing and testing patches with each other. Git, using github, is the preferred source control system for development.
# When a developer thinks a patch is ready, they submit a pull request for the [https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin bitcoin github repository] and post a message on the [http://www.bitcoin.org/smf/index.php?board=6.0 Development and Technical Forum].
# Pull requests are discussed on the forums and if there is consensus they're safe, tested, useful, well written, match coding style, etc. then they're merged into the 'master' branch.
# The master github branch is regularly built and tested, and periodically pushed to the [http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/develop subversion repository] to become a "release candidate" and then the official, stable, released bitcoin.
# After being accepted into the mainline master branch, bugfixes are merged or backported into the current stable branch, which periodically releases stable older versions.

* I object because B⃦ is already more or less universally accepted (Bitcoin.org, Bitbills.com, Bitcoin Charts/Watch/OTC, etc) as the standard BTC symbol. Unicode isn't going to accept any new symbol for a niche currency, so anything new would be relegated to the PUA anyway. Let's stick to what works. Bitcoin days destroyed for any given transaction is calculated by taking the number of Bitcoins in a transaction and multiplying it by the number of days it has been since those coins were last spent.

If someone has 100BTC that they received a week ago and they spend it then 700 bitcoin days have been destroyed. If they take those 100BTC and send them to several addresses and then spend them then although the total transaction volume could be arbitrarily large the number of bitcoindays destroyed is still 700.

==Theory of Operation==

bitcoind is a multithreaded C++ program. It is designed to be portable across Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. The multithreaded aspect leads to some complexity and the use of certain code patterns to deal with concurrency that may be unfamiliar to many programmers. Also, the code is aggressive in the use of C++ constructs, so it will help to be fluent with map, multimap, set, string, vector, iostream, and templates. As is typical of a C++ program, a lot of code tends to end up in the header files so be sure to search both the .cpp and .h files when looking for a function.

The point of Bitcoin is that it is a decentralized peer to peer currency.
That is the novelty about Bitcoin; the novelty is NOT that it comes along with a funky new way of counting things.

I agree with Gavin that this page should be deleted. Regardless of my personal opinion or the technical merits of tonal v. decimal, it's fair to say that tonal attracts scorn and ridicule from the vast majority of the population if they hear about it.
